A birth certificate is an extremely important document, and everyone should keep a safe copy just in case. It comes in handy as it’s one of the best ways to designate your citizenship and identity. You may need your birth certificate for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you need to apply for a passport, citizenship card, or driver’s license. Perhaps you are looking for facts about your life that can only be found on your birth certificate, such as your parent’s names and their places of birth. Or maybe you just want to have a copy for safe-keeping.

One of the places to look up your birth certificate is the Vital Records office of the state you were born in. This office is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, a government agency. Generally, ordering a certified copy of your birth certificate requires mailing in photo ID along with a fee of around $20. Orders may take up to six weeks to process, so only go this route if you absolutely don’t need your certificate right away.

In some cases, you may need to apply for a passport on short notice. Sometimes impromptu trips out of the country are inevitable — but if you don’t have your birth certificate, you’re gonna have some problems. Waiting six weeks for Vital Records to get back to you may prove disastrous.

Fortunately, it’s possible to find your birth certificate online. You won’t pay nearly as big a fee (sometimes you can even order it for free), and the wait is much shorter, sometimes instantaneous because there are many websites where you can simply download the certificate right away and print it off in the comfort of your own home.

This can be a life-safer for some. For others, it simply cuts down on red tape. Finding and ordering your birth certificate online means you won’t have to jump through so many hoops.

Making a family tree can be a fun and fulfilling hobby. But it also comes with many challenges. As you delve deeper into your family history, you might find your tree growing by hundreds of names in a very short period of time. It’s incredibly easy to get lost in all the information.

So here are some simple tips you can utilize to make your genealogy research easier!

1. Break your family tree into manageable sections rather than trying to handle the entire thing all at once. It may be a good idea to concentrate on one grandparent’s lineage at a time. This way the work will be less overwhelming and easier to digest.

2. Pay attention to detail. Work slow and steady. Always remember to check and double-check your facts to ensure accuracy. You should always review more than one document per person so that the facts, such as birth dates and locations, line up.

3. Take advantage of your computer and the internet when compiling your family tree. Having it all laid out digitally will make it easier to manage all of the names and dates. There are dozens of websites on the internet made specifically to help you with your genealogy research, so use them! Some require membership fees but there are still plenty of useful sites that can help you free of charge, like BirthDetails.com.

4. Connect with other genealogists! You can do this through online forums or you can stick to real life by joining clubs or societies in your community. Other genealogists may have a lot of advice and wisdom to impart. You may even find that your family tree crosses into someone else’s. A distant relative of yours may also be making a family tree. The two of you can combine your research and make the project that much fuller and richer.

5. Finally, if you get caught up on all the names and dates and find yourself frustrated and “stuck”, take a break and come back to it later. Genealogy should be a fun and exciting hobby, not a pain in the butt. By taking breaks and allowing yourself some time away from the project, you can return with a fresh start and a fresh mind.

With all the people search engines out there, how can you be sure which one is most effective? We here at BirthDetails.com have compiled a list of the Top 5 most popular and user-friendly people search engines on the web!

Intelius

Intelius is without a doubt the most popular and useful people search engine out there. Not only can you look up people, but you can do all sorts of nifty things like reverse phone and email lookups, criminal records checks, driving records, marriage & divorce records, protect your identity and even find out if there are any sex offenders living in your neighborhood!

Birth Details

Well now, we aren’t trying to toot our own horn here. But there’s no denying that Birth Details is quickly becoming one of the internet’s most popular people search engines! This is primarily because of its ease of use and free features. It contains a huge aggregated birth records database unmatched by other websites. It’s incredibly simple to use, even if you have never used a people search engine before. Also, we have a great blog.

Pipl.com

Pipl is a unique people search engine because it taps into what it calls “the deep web”. The deep web consists of documents and databases that normal search engine spiders cannot access. Because of this, Pipl offers search results that may include social networking profiles, files on document-sharing websites, photographs and blog entries.

ZabaSearch

Zabasearch is another popular people search engine. It is extremely simple to use and most of its features are entirely free! Only “premium” features will cost you. Don’t let its affordability fool you into thinking it provides poor quality… in reality, Zabasearch is renowned for its quality searches as well as its affordability. If you’re looking for a simple, no-strings-attached people search engine, try Zabasearch!

123People

Although less popular, 123People is a great website that uses an effective search engine. It digs into social networking profiles and blogs to pull up more information than conventional people search websites do. It also has a pretty cool email notification system that lets you know when changes have taken place in the search results.

Find Lost Parents

Are you wondering how to find lost parents? An alarming number of people have no contact with one or both of their birth parents. Usually this happens when someone is adopted. In that situation, the birth parents are required to completely give up their rights to visit the child and be involved in his or her life. In most cases, an additional birth record is created listing the new adoptive parents with no mention of the biological ones, which can make it difficult to track these people down.

Much of the time adopted children have no idea that they are adopted until they turn 18 (or even older), and once they find out they are overcome with an overwhelming desire to find their real parents. This need is quite understandable.

In other cases, sometimes a father or mother will abandon their family, move far away and start a new life, without maintaining any contact at all with their old family. Many children feel betrayed and confused by this, and may wish to find their parent to reconnect with them or ask them questions.

Fortunately, finding lost parents doesn’t have to be a difficult task. If you can provide a name, you can get started on your search right away. It’s best to have as much information on hand as possible — such as location, birth date, and occupation. But if you lack additional details, it is still possible to find your birth parent… it just might take longer. Searching for a mother may be more difficult because it is possible she has a different surname due to getting married.

By far the best way to track down birth parents is to use a people search engine on the internet such as BirthDetails.com. It’s much faster, cheaper, and more convenient than using Vital Records or other government-based archives. You can perform a search and find the exact person you need in a matter of minutes! Not only can you find out their address and phone number, but you can also “sneak a peak” at their income, home value, and the names of their relatives.

It’s by far the best way to find lost parents. Once you have found out their information, you can contact them and begin to reconnect. It can be an emotional and frightening journey, but you’ll be glad you made it!

As parents, one of our greatest fears is leaving our children vulnerable to attacks from sexual predators! Therefore, it should be one of our main priorities to know our neighborhood inside and out to better protect our children from possible attacks.

Using the Intelius Sex Offender Check, you can look up the number of sexual offenders in your neighborhood and obtain their addresses. You may be surprised to learn just how many of them there are!

This valuable information will give you the facts you need to develop basic safety guidelines for your children. Perhaps there is a sex offender living in the house your children pass every day on the way to school! You’d have no way of knowing unless you conduct a sex offender check.

Intelius also provides a thorough criminal records check. Is there someone you or your children interact with regularly whom you just have a “funny feeling” about? Conduct a Criminal Records Check and put your fears at ease.

I highly recommend using the Intelius Sex Offender Check right away as a means of better protecting your family!

If you’ve spent any time at all researching your family tree, likely you’ve stumbled upon the two major genealogy research hubs on the internet, Ancestry and MyHeritage.

However, even though the websites carry some value, without a thorough understanding of how to conduct genealogy research, it’s likely you’ll reach a dead end at some point or another. Both of those services are expensive to use and provide shaky results at best! As a result, the beginner genealogist is often left in the dust.

What you need is an easy to understand, step-by-step guide teaching you how to conduct genealogy research from A to Z.

Luckily, I found this absolutely fantastic guide: How To Make A Family Tree.

This e-book contains dozens of pages of valuable information that can be found nowhere else on the internet. To even come close to the amount of knowledge it reveals, you would have to spend hours upon hours of endless research. And who has time for that?

Here are a few of the things How To Make A Family Tree will teach you:

How to find ancestors from overseas

How to know if you’ve found the right person

How to build a family tree with lightening speed – even if it’s your first time

How to find rare surname databases

Free alternatives to the “big-name”, expensive search databases

As a special bonus, you’ll also receive a huge set of family tree templates.

This is by far the best way for a beginner to get started. If you’re frustrated with your genealogy research, seem to be going nowhere, or if you don’t even know where to start, How To Make A Family Tree will truly solve all of your problems and get you on the fast track to completing your family tree sooner than you ever thought possible.

So are you going to keep twiddling your thumbs, hoping that one day you’ll find the time and resources to finish your research, or are you going to check this book out and get started TODAY?

For beginners of genealogy research, the task at hand can seem overwhelming! Compiling accurate information about your ancestors can be a long and arduous process. But don’t get discouraged. Here are some great tips that you can utilize immediately. Hopefully it’ll make your genealogy research easier and as a result, more fun! After all, making your family tree is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby — not a headache.

1. Learn to be organized! Over the course of your genealogy research, you will likely find yourself buried in paperwork and documents. If everything is a cluttered mess around you, your mind will become cluttered as well, and it’ll be easier to get frustrated and tempted to throw in the towel. Invest in some filing cabinets and try to store many things online. Scan photographs and documents and put them in the appropriate folder on your computer.

2. Find out if any of your relatives have previously conducted genealogy research. Why start from scratch if someone has already done much of the grunt work for you? You can take their information and add/edit it as needed, or perhaps the two of you can work together on the project.

3. If you’re having trouble pinpointing exact birth and death dates of your relatives, try going to the cemetery where they were buried and searching there. Most of the time, the dates will be printed on their tombstones. This seems like an obvious solution but many people overlook it.

4. Looking for distant relatives still alive in your family today? You may need to speak with a second or third cousin to get the information you need to fill in the gaps. One of the best places for tracking people down is Facebook. If you have a full name and location, Facebook can act as a personalized, virtual White Pages. Many distant relatives have been connected or reconnected through Facebook and other social networking sites.

5. Despite all the advances made in genealogy research in recent years thanks to the internet, don’t underestimate the power of your local library. Most likely it will contain valuable documents that are not accessible online. One important resource your library may offer is access to local newspapers. You can research these newspapers to find out important information such as birth and marriage announcements and obituaries.

6. When speaking with relatives over the phone or in person, try to record everything they tell you. The best thing to use is a tape recorder, but if that isn’t possible, you could simply use a pen & paper to transcribe important facts. You’ll want to do this to ensure that you record and remember everything they speak about. Don’t assume that you’ll remember everything — chances are you’ll forget. Another important tip: make sure to disclose to them the fact that they are being recorded.

So there you go! If you follow all of these tips, you’ll find that your genealogy research is going quite well. Chances are you’ll come up against some roadblocks, but stay persistent and don’t give up!
